jesmonite: the wonder material

Get to know a bit more about what makes this stuff so great!

Here at kolé, we’re a little bit obsessed with Jesmonite, so I wanted to delve into the properties and uses of Jesmonite, and get into why it's a game-changer for eco-conscious creators.

What is Jesmonite?

Jesmonite is a versatile composite eco-resin that combines a mineral powder base with a water-based acrylic resin. Initially developed as an alternative to fibreglass and cast concrete, Jesmonite has gained immense popularity due to its lightweight nature, durability, and remarkable versatility. This material has found its way into various industries as a sustainable alternative to traditional options. Read our introduction to Jesmonite here

Environmental Sustainability

One of the standout features of Jesmonite is its commitment to the environment. With a powder base primarily composed of modified gypsum, a non-toxic mineral found naturally in sedimentary rocks, Jesmonite minimises its impact on the planet. Gypsum is abundantly available, making it an eco-friendly choice. While the acrylic liquid component contains plastic, its exceptional durability ensures an extended lifespan for Jesmonite products, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

Versatile Applications

Because Jesmonite can be moulded, shaped, and cast into virtually any form you can imagine, it’s opened up a wealth of possibilities in many industries. Its ability to replicate intricate details makes it an ideal choice for designers seeking precision and elegance in their creations. Whether you're aiming for minimalist sophistication or bold artistic expression, Jesmonite is your ally.

Heatproof Characteristics

One of the impressive characteristics of Jesmonite is its heatproof nature, making it suitable for various applications where high temperatures are involved. When properly cured, Jesmonite can withstand heat without warping or degrading, offering durability and stability. This quality means the Jesmonite coasters and saucers at kolé are heatproof, making them excellent surfaces for candles and hot drinks, or as trivets for your hot dishes when setting the table.

Water-Resistant and Sealable

In addition to its heatproof properties, Jesmonite boasts exceptional resistance to water when properly sealed. By applying a suitable sealant, Jesmonite can become impermeable to moisture, ensuring long-lasting performance in damp environments. It can be used for bathroom fixtures, outdoor sculptures, and even decorative elements in swimming pools or fountains. When it can withstand that much water, it’s no surprise that kolé products are water resistant and will maintain their structural integrity for a long long time. It’s advised to keep products with cork bases off wet surfaces for an extended time however, simply as cork isn’t quite as hard wearing as Jesmonite!

Jesmonite's versatility goes beyond its aesthetic appeal and eco-friendly composition. Its heatproof capabilities and resistance to water, when sealed, add even more value and expand the range of applications for this extraordinary material. With Jesmonite, you can create functional, stunning, and long-lasting masterpieces - just like all our kolé goodies!
