Things are a bit different!

I decided that the materials and methods I was using to make kolé products weren’t quite right.

Using off-the-shelf ceramic tiles limited the possibilities in terms of product creation, and the adhesives and grouts I used just didn’t travel well.

In order to make the products the best they possibly can be, I’ve spent a long time redesigning existing kolé products (i.e. learning how to 3D model and 3D print prototypes), and testing new materials. 

what’s everything made of now?

After testing alternative materials, I decided to use Jesmonite. 

Jesmonite is a composite material, which is made up of a gypsum powder and a water-based acrylic resin

As well as being versatile, Jesmonite is durable and hard-wearing, resistant to water, chemicals and fire. 

Jesmonite is also considered to be environmentally friendly.

It is a low VOC (volatile organic compound) material, meaning that it produces low emissions in its production. What’s more, it’s non-toxic and non-flammable.

How do I care for Jesmonite?

Jesmonite is really strong and resilient, but like everything we treasure, it needs to be cared for a little.

Luckily, it’s all pretty straightforward. 

Firstly, don’t expose your kolé items to prolonged moisture, as this will cause the cork base to disintegrate. A splash here and there is totally fine, as the Jesmonite is sealed, just don’t go leaving it on the bathroom sink, ya know?

If anything gets a little grubby, wipe it down with a soft cloth and gentle cleanser. For melted wax in particular, leave it to cool and set, then scrape off the wax, and wipe away any residue that’s left over.

What's the deal with colours?

I’ll keep adding/changing the colours of the products as time goes on. If there’s a colour that’s no longer in stock, or something you just can’t wait to see, just get in touch and I’ll try to accommodate a custom order.

It’s also worth noting that colours may differ very slightly from images, and from item to item, as I mix each colour in small batches.

When will my order be sent out?

The majority of kolé items are made to order to avoid waste. 

I aim to have all orders made and sent out within a few working days, but kolé is a one-woman operation, so please be patient!
